Behrens, Olen and Machet 1999:312 defines information literacy as ability to access, evaluate and use information effectively for your purpose from a variety of formal and informal sources.Which therefore aims to empower students with various information retrieval skills where they will be able to analyze, organize, and critically evaluate information from a variety of sources which includes electronic, print and audio-visual formats in this new information explosion era.
Whereas bibliographic Instruction merely refers to programs designed by information centers such as libraries that will teach users how to locate the information they may require effectively, hence in academic institution all first year students are required to attend library orientation, where they will be given guidelines on how to use the library system or OPAC to locate library materials.
The teacher librarian has been entrusted with the development and implementation of a high quality, integrated program of resource-based teaching and learning. Which certainly means that the teacher-librarian is a key player, but not a solitary one. Hence the factors which led to the evaluation of the teacher librarian is rather broad and complex at nature as its the responsibility of developing a effective program which was to support the schools administration and diagnose learning needs, jointly prescribe and develop programs to address those needs, and assess the extent to which the program has been successful in addressing the needs determined.
Since academic libraries enroll different patrons from different educational backgrounds, with different information needs and some of them are educators and students not knowing how to use the facilities which are being provided for them in order to successfully complete their projects. Therefore academic librarians have a role to play in to conducting IL sessions as part of their library orientation program, this will therefore empower our students with skills to collect, analyze, critically evaluate information from a variety of sources.
