Use thinking to Learn

If you look around, you'll see that Threshold Theory applies to many things in life. There is a minimum threshold of competence that you need to develop in nearly any endeavor. Success is rarely as simple as “just work harder.”


According to threshold concept theory, in each academic discipline there exists concepts that, once grasped, allow new and previously inaccessible ways of perceiving and thinking about the subject to emerge (Meyer & Land, 2003).  As we all know each individual is different and so are their learning capabilities,one ought to understand that in each phase of learning one may encounter difficulties (Learning has a series of slops) hence its said that  with threshold  concept learning may be viewed or considered as passing through a portal which may open up previously inaccessible ways of thinking A further complication might be the operation of an ‘underlying game’ which requires the learner to comprehend the often tacit games of enquiry or ways of thinking and practising inherent within specific disciplinary discourses. In this sense we might wish to talk of ‘threshold practices’ or ‘threshold experiences’ that are necessary in the learner’s development.

I must say that the last session was very insightful even though I had missed the previous session I certainly did not fell that I had missed out on a lot as all the learning which were discussed are intertwined as one cant not talk about the other and leave out the rest. I am most certain that I am still to learn a lot from this module.

  1. There is a link between the sessions, and I'm finding it very intriguing. Most of the lessons has been on things that we are accustomed to everyday but didn't actually know that there are terms for it. Like the different learning theories and the 'threshold concept'.
